CLASSES OF DARJEELING TEA

The following classifications of Darjeeling Tea are recognized as legitimate and dramatically affect the prices at auction (either public or private estate) and, of course, at retail.

CLASS I

This class is traceable back to the original bushes of the 1840's and is the most sought after and expensive.

CLASS II

This class is a hybrid of two or more of the original or Class I bushes.

CLASS III

This class is a hybrid between a hybrid and an Assam indigenous species. Its origins MUST be traceable back to a Class II above.

CLASS IV

This class must be traceable back to a Class II but the bushes do not grow in the Darjeeling District of India. They may grow in the Doars District of India or outside of the borders of India such as in Nepal, Tibet or the Kingdom of Bhutan.

The Tea Shop carries only Class I and Class IV, since Class IV estates produce some (keyword "some," not all) extraordinary Darjeeling Teas.
