According to scientists, the polyphenols in green tea are antioxidants 20 times more powerful than Vitamin E and 200 times more than Vitamin C. Dr. Jeffrey Blumberg, professor of nutrition at Tufts, cites a study at Boston University that ''showed better vascular function in black-tea drinkers with heart disease than those who didn't drink it,'' and says, ''The only double-blind study of its kind showed that while smoking damages DNA, green-tea drinkers have less-damaged DNA.

In general, tea drinkers benefit in a number of ways because:

Tea has minimal caffeine content and acts as a gentle stimulant.

If taken without milk and sugar, a cup of tea yields only about four calories.
A Dutch study has shown that people drinking between four to five cups of black tea a day, had nearly 70% less risk of suffering a stroke than those who drank only two cups or less.
Tea has cancer preventive properties.
Japanese research indicates that tea prevents formation of dental plaque and kills some oral bacteria that are responsible for gum disease.
